Background of the Study

Religious pilgrimage activities in Badagry have emerged as an important economic catalyst, drawing visitors from diverse regions and stimulating local commerce. Pilgrimage sites in Badagry serve not only as spiritual centers but also as hubs for cultural exchange and economic activities (Folarin, 2023). The influx of pilgrims creates demand for hospitality, transportation, local crafts, and food services, thereby generating income and employment opportunities for residents (Ajibola, 2024). Moreover, the activities surrounding pilgrimages often lead to infrastructural improvements and enhanced community services (Soyinka, 2025). Despite these benefits, the sustainability of pilgrimage-driven economic development is challenged by inadequate facilities, seasonal fluctuations in visitor numbers, and limited promotional efforts. This study investigates the economic impact of religious pilgrimages in Badagry, analyzing their role in local economic development and identifying opportunities for maximizing their benefits.

Statement of the Problem

Religious pilgrimage activities in Badagry, while economically beneficial, face challenges that hinder their full potential. Inadequate infrastructure, seasonal variability, and insufficient marketing limit the positive economic impacts of pilgrimages (Folarin, 2023). Local businesses and service providers struggle to meet the fluctuating demand, resulting in missed opportunities for sustained economic growth (Ajibola, 2024). The lack of coordinated efforts among stakeholders further exacerbates these challenges, necessitating a detailed investigation into how religious pilgrimages can be leveraged more effectively to drive economic development (Soyinka, 2025).

Objectives of the Study:

To evaluate the economic impact of religious pilgrimages in Badagry.

To identify challenges affecting pilgrimage-driven economic activities.

To recommend strategies for enhancing the economic benefits of pilgrimages.

Research Questions:

What is the economic contribution of religious pilgrimages in Badagry?

What challenges limit the economic potential of pilgrimage activities?

What strategies can maximize the economic benefits of pilgrimages?

Research Hypotheses:

H₁: Religious pilgrimages significantly boost local economic activity.

H₂: Infrastructure inadequacies limit the economic impact of pilgrimages.

H₃: Coordinated stakeholder efforts can enhance pilgrimage-driven economic development.

Significance of the Study

This study is significant as it explores the economic impact of religious pilgrimages in Badagry, offering insights into how these activities can drive local development. The findings will aid policymakers, tourism boards, and local businesses in designing strategies that optimize economic benefits while preserving the cultural and spiritual integrity of pilgrimage sites (Folarin, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:

This study is limited to the economic impact of religious pilgrimage activities in Badagry Local Government Area, focusing on local economic factors and seasonal trends without extending to other tourism sectors.

Definitions of Terms:

Religious Pilgrimage: A journey to a sacred site for spiritual purposes.

Economic Impact: The effect of an activity on local economic conditions.

Infrastructure: The physical and organizational structures needed for economic activity.
